Mock Trial
I had an interesting experience last night - I participated in a mock trial. What’s a mock trial, you ask? It’s basically similar in nature to a real trial, with the prosecution and defense presenting their opening and closing arguments, and the testimonies of witnesses being read. The “jury,” of which I was a member, answers questionnaires throughout the proceedings, in an effort to help the lawyers better prepare for their case. At the end of the “trial,” the jury deliberates while being video taped and comes back with a verdict. The atmosphere is definitely different from a real trial, though, since we know that we’re leaving at a certain time that night (not sequested like a real jury might be) and we know that the decision that we make won’t really affect someone’s life.
While I can’t go into the details of the case I heard last night, I can say that it’s a very interesting time. Doing something like this makes you take a stand on issues, and then forces you to argue them effectively to others. It’s interesting to see how other people think about the issues at hand, and how each person’s background and lifestyle come into play. If you’re interested in participating in one of these, let me know and I’ll get you in touch with the right person.
I also think I’ve read too much
Grisham for my own good. ![]()
