Gmail
Some of you may have heard about the new email service that Google will be rolling out soon. It offers 1GB of storage, enough room to keep emails for many, many years to come. In order to allow this type of storage, Google is doing something that has many people complaining and privacy advocates up in arms: Google will scan your emails for keywords and display ads based on these keywords. Personally, I don’t see what all the fuss is about. You know before you sign up that this is going to happen, so if someone has a problem with it, don’t use the service.
I’ve been lucky enough to have been a beta tester of Gmail for a couple months now, and I’m extremely impressed with it. I don’t use it for personal email, only for newsletters, online purchases, registrations and such. Haven’t had a single piece of spam yet. The interface is excellent, much better than Hotmail.com.
The beta period is almost over, meaning Gmail will go live in the next month or so. The good email addresses are already being gobbled up quickly, since Google is giving Gmail testers invites, so they can invite others to sign up to use it. I currently have 4 invites up for grabs. If you’re interested in getting an early chance at using Gmail, send me an email or comment and I’ll invite you.

Yeah one of our other friends started using it the other day as well. Though I dont think they are a tester which is interesting. Hmm.. I dont know. Is it going to be free once they go live with it?

I’m confused. So is this “Gmail” just an e-mail service but ir blocks spam extra well? I mean what is so special about it. And is it free?

What’s special is 1GIG of space and the ads are not overwhelming.

Yes, Gmail is free, and will continue to be free when it goes live. The service is supported by the ads, which are very non-intrusive. I hardly notice them at all.

No Lindsey will try anything at least once
Hmm…it does sound interesting. If you have no other offers, sign me up. I have heard good things. A gig of space is always nice especially to send large docs.

I signed up for an account too but I haven’t figured out what to do w/ it because I already have too many e-mail accounts and I really don’t want to do the whole, “this is my new address thing.” So what do I do?
Jun 17th, 2004 at 13:51:07
I’m using mine mainly for newsletters and such. I’ve moved all my subscriptions and such over from hotmail to gmail. Maybe you can use it like that, or see if you can forward your yahoo, hotmail, etc emails to gmail. Guess it depends on how much you like gmail compared to them, though…

I understand your pain Ashlee. Granted I have accounts out there that I have no clue about anymore which kind of scares me. Knowing that there are things out there that I dont have a clue where they are.
Jun 17th, 2004 at 19:36:02
Yeah Robin and Ashlee I’m the exact same way lol.
Chris was just getting on me about that the other day…
(15:08:32) Elwood Blues: I take you up on one of those Gmail invites ONLY if nobody else does. I can always sign up when it comes public, its just you know how i like to be on he cutting edge of technology and stuff. FYI, you buddy icon isn’t showing…
(15:09:33) Chris Vaught: do you really need another email account? I can’t keep track of all of yours. your worse than me!
Hey I guess we all have our habits… Like having 50 million e-mail accounts and only useing like two of them lol. I’m just trying to prove I think were’re all kinda like that!
