Problems with Multi-IM programs
Once again, Yahoo has decided to be un-cooperative and has decided to block access to it’s IM service from third party IM programs, such as GAIM and Trillian. Boooo!!! They’ve done this before, and every time they do, the developers at Trillian, etc find a way around it. We can only hope they do so again. I’ve never seemed to have much luck with Yahoo IM. And I guess I just dont worry about it since I dont have any friends Yahoo Id nor do I need anymore IM services since I have the other main three.
Jun 23rd, 2004 at 23:38:26
I use it the least of the three. I have a couple of people I would talk to on there, compared to much lengthier lists in the other services.
I’m pretty much strictly AIM and MSN now. I run Trillian when I’m on my own computer. Which is… unplugged in my room at home now. Doh.

Well, I just tried out gaim. No offense, but I don’t think it’s going to work for me. Not just b/c of the yahoo problem (which really I think only one person that I talk to on there is not on another IM program I have too) but it keeps having errors and closing on me! Maybe I’ll try Trillion. Really I went.. how long have I been home? without AIM so I guess I can just use MSN…

I’ve never found a multi-IM program that works. Their are certain things I like about each program and I lose that with the multiIMs.

No offense taken, Ashlee. Works for some, not for others. Trillian is more stable than gaim (gaim is technically still in beta), so you may have better luck with it. The catch is that you have to pay for the full-featured version and it’s more of a memory hog than Trillian. It’s also a lot “bigger,” meaning flashier, fancier, etc. I’m a minimalist when it comes to that stuff, and gaim is nice and simple looking, so that’s another reason why I settled on it. It’s like churches - there are many choices out there so each person can find one that they like. And that’s my deep thought for this early hour of the day

Wow, comparing selecting an instant messaging program to selecting a church…. that’s a grasp.
I guess I am church wanderer then, cause I run three different messaging programs.
Jun 24th, 2004 at 10:54:52
So am I the only one on here that leaves messages that doesnt’ have a website? The others I have clicked on have one hmmm, maybe I should change that. Speaking of which, Chris do you want to set me one up sometime for the wedding so people can stay up to date?
Jun 24th, 2004 at 11:09:32
Haha, yeah, Mr Biology genes, looks like you are one of the few without a website. Even Bryan has one now! I’ll definitely get a site together for the wedding. Hunt up some good pics of you and Elizabeth and send ‘em my way, along with any details you want posted, such as reception location, church, etc.
Jun 24th, 2004 at 11:37:44
Come on David! Get with the program! Everyone else is doing it! hehe
Jun 24th, 2004 at 12:01:23
Boo Yahoo. Bad, bad Yahoo….Oh wait, I don’t even use it, nevermind. On the other hand, yay websites!!
Jun 24th, 2004 at 13:04:44
Surely Chris and I would have rubbed off on you enough to make you get a web site David.
Jun 24th, 2004 at 16:47:32
Well I can’t say much because I don’t think my brother has a website anymore. He did at one time. But now that he’s married and all I don’t imagine that would interest him so much now.
So Nick, do all your siblings have websites/blogs?
Jun 24th, 2004 at 17:00:39
I have actually grown to like Trillian. It has most of the basics that you need but it doesnt have some of the additional functions of the individual programs.
But Jeff I was like you until November, I ran all three messenger programs. But when my harddrive stopped working one random day and I had to reinstall everything from scratch. It was much easier to download one program instead of all three. I have since downloaded MSN messenger separatedly, but I only used it separately when I was playing games online with Ash.
Jun 24th, 2004 at 17:26:59
Ashlee,
I made one for my brother, but he didn’t use it or give me stuff with which to fill it.
To answer your question, no.
Jun 24th, 2004 at 17:40:14
Yeah there are pros and cons to the individual programs and the mass chat programs. But really couldn’t we all just use one single messaging program? Why don’t we convince our few friends that use aol to get an msn account and then we can ditch aol… or something like that?
Jun 24th, 2004 at 19:27:09
Haha, Ashlee, you’re in the minority for me. You’re one of two people that I commuicate with on MSN. The rest mainly use AIM or ICQ…
Jun 24th, 2004 at 22:27:26
Ashlee, I will agree with Chris on this one. I mostly talk on AIM and ICQ to my friends, as well. Granted it sometimes depends on the day which one I use to talk to some friends like Chris because there are so many options. Which can also be good when one of the systems doesnt want to cooperate, I can just pick up the conversation on another system.

Update on this:
CNet.com reports more on this issue here:
http://news.com.com/Users+fume+over+Yahoo-Trillian+scuffle/2100-1032_3-5246933.html?part=rss&tag=5246933&subj=news.1032.20
“Just a few hours after Yahoo changed its instant messenger protocols, Cerulean Studios issued a patch to allow users of its popular Trillian software to connect again with users of Yahoo’s messaging program.”
Trillian and GAIM developers share code with each other, so GAIM users should soon have access to Yahoo again, too.
Jun 25th, 2004 at 10:46:36
Now that I’m looking at my lists I think that almost everyone on my MSN list also has AIM, granted I don’t have all of their names since I didn’t use it as much and not at all for a year. So I could essentially get the AIM names for the MSN users I don’t have on there and use it. But I think I’m a little partial to MSN. I like the games and webcam and real picture icons and the boxes the show you who signed in. But today my GAIM is working ok so far so maybe it won’t matter.
Wow, so much thought on something so unimportant.
Jun 26th, 2004 at 19:18:04
Yea I was wondering why I couldn’t log in with Yahoo! in GAIM anymore. I was just about to ask Chris about it or download Gaim 0.79. Well nevermind…

Chris,
So if I download the patch above than I can use Yahoo! again with GAIM. Or is it just with my Trillian service?
