Suggestions Wanted

Okay, here’s a question for you all…

How many posts should I leave displayed on the main page? This can be either a number of days, or a number of posts.

I know some blogs where every single post is displayed, creating a very long page. I don’t think I would like that.

Some blogs only lists posts for the current day. Since I don’t really post that many in one day, I think I need more than that.

I previously was showing all entries for the past 7 days. I changed that to 10 a couple days ago. Once the post has been up for 10 days, it’ll no longer be on the front page, but will still be available in the archives. The thing is that I don’t think anyone really checks or comments on postings that are in the archives. So, when the oft commented “Change Successful” post gets moved to the archives, will any one really check it anymore? I’m trying to get an optimal balance between just enough and not too many posts on the main page.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

  1. Well the thing is, most of us check your page probably several times in a day so the archives thing really isn’t a big issue to fret about. But for your *new* visitors or occassional visitors, I would say that they would either love your writing so much that they go back and read all of the archives, or they would read no more than a weeks worth anyway.

  2. Thanks to Ashlee’s Translation I understood her comment quicker. Thanks Ash…

I think 10 days is not bad. Though I think there are a few other things to consider:
    1) Is the post still getting daily new comments?
    2) Are the comments pertinent to the orginal post?
These would be reasons to leave a post on longer. Also it seems, that some people never go back and comment on posts three or four down. So its hard to say.

Also, it would be nice to be able to know when a new comment was made. Maybe you could add a time stamp on the front page next to the comment indicator. I know the number increases but so many posts to read, I get confused on where I am.

  3. Robin, you can’t remember the last number for every post on every blog of comments so you can know when there are new ones? I mean really! However you have this amazing ability to understand my 133t speak with minimal cussing following the translation process.

  4. Nope sorry sure cant remember all those numbers. I know I am suppose to be this math geek but really I dont remember numbers like that sorry.
My head is starting to hurt translating all your comments Ash. I really hope that it is fixed before too long. :-)

  5. How about I do a link on the side that you click to get the 10 most recent comments? That would help some, right?

  6. By the way…please everyone go read Ashlees page and latest post at 5:05 pm. And guess what, you dont have to decrypt it in order to read it. So bye Chris…catch your page another time. :-)

  7. Woohoo! I got the much requested feature of the name link opening the website up in a new window done!

  8. good jarb

  9. How about every other comment having a different background? :-)

  10. Way to Chris!

10 is good, so is 7. the link of last 10 comments would be nice too.
    I’m easy to please.

  11. Nick,
Be careful what you ask for! haha

    Jeff,
That’s a good idea- being able to see the last 10 comments rather than the last 30. Granted there aren’t many posts that get that many comments. We’ve just all went a little overboard lately, including myself.

  12. Chris, I have another idea about this whole comment thing. How about putting the comments in desc order instead of asc order of input? That way the new comments are on the top instead of the bottom. Not sure how that would work out but its a thought.

  13. You know, Robin, I had thought about reversing the order of comments, but I think that will cause more confusion in the end. Comments on Blogger, Haloscan, and most of blogs are listed in ascending order, so new comers would be a little confused. Plus, it’s just natural to read top to bottom. I know when I read comments, I’ll go back a few for context, and it would be weird to have to scroll up instead of down. Any one else have thoughts on this?

Also, you’ll notice a link on the left side for the 10 Most Recent comments. This list is ordered the way that you suggested Robin, since the list is across all entries.

  14. Yeah, I think Haloscan has the option of putting them in reverse order but then it’d be harder to follow the conversation. I still think if there was a way to make each of our comments in different colors that would help b/c then you would know to scroll until you see your color and then read what was posted after your last comment. But I’m not really offering this suggestion because my messages might get translated or something…

So, Chris, I agree with your veto to Robin’s suggestion. :) It would confuse me.

  15. It was just a thought and I agree with both of you. I really wasnt sure it would work but thought it sounded like fun at least. We seem to be enjoying having some fun. Thanks for the comments link. It looks like fun as well.

  16. So, on some blogs :-) gets turned into a graphical smiley, yet on mine, it stays a :-). I’m partial to :-) over the graphical display, but what do you all think?

  17. I didn’t read all those comments above. But I would say around three or four. I was just thinkin the other day that you homepage isn’t really set up very well.

  18. Either way works for me… though i will say that you can make a lot more fun faces without the graphics…the graphics keep me from really making the pt I wont too sometimes..then again some of the graphics are better than anything you can come up with…so now that I was no help…i am going to head to bed

  19. the emoticon idea sounds very cool chris. That would be neat if you managed that!
