8th Grade Exam
Ok, all you smart people out there that think the riddles and puzzles I post are too easy. Take a look at this. It’s an eighth-grade final exam from 1895. How do you think you would have done?

What the heck? Okay some of this, I could have answered in 8th grade as I was studying it. I know that there are things on the test that I should know but since my memory is not so good and never has been very good. I dont know them. At least I have heard of the concepts and remember studying it at some pt in my life. Then again there are other things on there that I am not sure that I ever learned.
I think it very interesting how and what we study in life changes over time. I am not sure its always for the better. For example, how my brother was taught to subtract just blows my mind. If you had to solve 78 - 31 = _____ , how would you go about doing that? Would you rewrite the problem to answer it? Curious. I will show you what my brother was taught after some people read this.

Yeah, their is a new way of doing subtraction. I have a friend that is a teacher, they don’t do carrying and all that… their is some crazy new way. I forget what they call it.

This I’m interested in…can’t believe they’ve changed how to do math…

It’s called “regrouping”, beyond that, I don’t know.

Wow, that’s harder than the last test I had to get my B.S.

ouch…my head hurts.

You got me on this 8th grade test! Wow, thanks for the update on the change in how to subtract. I’d like to learn more. I was working with a kid recently on subtracting numbers and he seemed very confused. Oops! Guess I need a little tutoring to get up to speed with the “new math”.

Yes Jeff you are on the correct path there about the regrouping and no carrying. Basically, they teach you to change the equation to be 78 + (- 31) = ___________. Dont remember the basics past that on how you actually solve the problem. It all seems backwards to me.
Kari, Dont feel bad. When I tried to help my brother in High School with his math, I think I was more confused than he was with this new method.

I’m um.. busy.
Jun 30th, 2004 at 18:23:52
So you are too busy to take an 8th grade exam?
It really shouldnt be that difficult for you

With that logic, I shouldn’t be too busy to sit on my own poop and drool on myself either.
Who am I kidding, I do all of these things!

Nick,
Umm… thanks for ummm… sharing… You’re “special.”
About this test:
So I could answer some of the questions and parts of others, but I definitely don’t think I would pass. I also quit reading it after I realized how little I remember. But in our defense, the 1600’s were a lot more recent to students in 1895 than they are now. And I bet some of those rules have changed/evolved over the years anyway. So I think we shouldn’t let this make us feel too dumb. I mean the 8th graders in 1895 couldn’t write a simple sorting loop.

So we should be able to remember things from the oh 1800’s pretty well.
