lol, those testers, always poking holes in things! It’s not my fault, it’s the bad requirements!
And don’t forget about the elephant sitting on the other side of my cubicle, always beating and banging on things…

and making his chair go “squeak squeak squeak” when he bounces his knee. Man I don’t miss that!

If the builders don’t like it they can give all their electronics back to the engineers that made them.
Jul 1st, 2004 at 17:08:27
That is so true. We had programmers deploy something last night and all they have done today is fix that plus all the other programs that they didnt think about being affected in the process.
Got to love those programmers, especially that dont test or see the whole picture

I have no clue what you’re talking about Robin…
After all my great education, learning from the likes of Dr French and such, all my releases go smoothly, with no problems. I just stay past midnight on those days for the heck of it, to bask in the great success and wonderful job that I’ve done.
NOT!

Us with programming experience call that job security!!!
Jul 1st, 2004 at 23:35:34
LOL Chris…Yeah I am sure that is why you stay all night at work. Whatever!!! You programmers are all the same and drive me crazy.
By the way I am not saying that I am perfect but some of those I have worked with in the past 4 years are just almost unbearable when it comes to testing and making sure things work the first time.
Jul 1st, 2004 at 23:45:31
Chris makes it sound so bad..but then he comes in 10-15 minutes late every day, so those extra 12 hours of work every 6 months add up to nothing!

hey, it’s only 5-10 minutes now! I’m getting better! darn traffic…

If it weren’t for debugging what would we do with 80% of our time? Wait, I mean what would YOU do with 80% of your time? Besides, that’s where all the fun is.
Jul 2nd, 2004 at 10:14:14
okay okay, 5 or 10 minutes it is. Heck, You’ve beat me to work sometimes
It helps me to live only 7 miles away.
Jul 2nd, 2004 at 22:50:19
Ashlee, We could do lots with that 80% of our time. Like make much needed improvements actually implement strong backup/security processes. And so much more.

http://www.junit.org
Write unit tests for every API in your program, and write them before you write your code, and you can start spending only 40% of your time debugging.
Also, use some Design-By-Contract (Java 1.4 has a new facility for doing ‘asserts’ that’s particularly good), and good old fashioned checking of input.
And gets() is the work of Satan
Sorry…staring at a debugger trying to find a race condition when I could’ve found it with an assert statement is not my idea of fun

OK? Anyway back to the quote. That is very true though; That quote I mean…

Harold,
You should add a comments feature to your blog so we can share with you there too. Don’t you want to know what we think? I guess if you did you’d read our blogs, eh?

The value of your opinion is directly proportional to the number of people who ask for it.

Nick you never cease to amaze me with your intellectual ability. The thoughts that come from you should be collected and made into a book.
Jul 4th, 2004 at 14:05:30
That is a very wise saying David. Now I just need someone to take the initiative to follow me around and write down what I say.
Want a job?
Jul 4th, 2004 at 14:14:43
You know, it’s been said that there’s nothing said today that hasn’t already been said before.
Jul 5th, 2004 at 11:07:33
Nick, I’ll take the job. I’ll see you in Hoptown in a week to begin.
Jul 5th, 2004 at 11:08:49
As I write everything down we’ll be able to see if the things you say are original or just repeats of something someone else has said according to Ashlee’s hypothesis.
Jul 5th, 2004 at 11:35:31
It’s not my hypothisis. That would be like saying I said something new… If everything’s already been said before it’s someone else’s hypothesis first. I don’t want to plagerize.
