Trials
Saw this on Nick’s blog and wanted to pass it on…
“When a baby giraffe is born, one of the first things the mother does is swing a long leg outward and kick the baby so it is sent sprawling, head over heels.
If it doesn’t stand up, the violent process is repeated until, finally, the calf stands for the first time on wobbly legs.
Then the mother giraffe does a most remarkable thing: She kicks the baby off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up quickly to stay with the herd, where there is safety. Without this kind of early training, the young giraffe could easily become a meal for lions, hyenas or wild dogs.”

So…Tough Love really does work… Is that what it’s trying to say? A little rough handling will make you strong and help you stay alive… ‘Cause that’s the message I got from it…

Wow..thats pretty interesting. I dont know that its necessarily tough love but love that will make sure the baby giraffe will survive in the wild.

What a rough entry to the world… first like a seven foot drop… splat! and then kicked repeatedly. Hrm maybe my life’s not been so bad after all…

Do giraffe birth standing up?

Ash, I believe that they do. It might be a rough entry into the world but they learn quickly how to fend for themselves.

Man, that’s rough! I wonder if the rough start to life they have is what causes their tongues to be so rough?

And how the heck do you know that the Giraffe’s tongue is so rough, Ashlee?
