The Da Vinci Code
Many of you probably have heard of the “The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this novel. For the longest time, I’ve been debating on whether or not I should read it. Obviously, since I’m a Christian and am familiar with the Bible, I’m probably going to disagree with most of the story. I’ve found it hard to reason paying money to “support” the author for a book that is “wrong.” Thinking about it today, though, I came to the conclusion that maybe I should read it, so if I ever get in a discussion that involves the book, I at least have some clue what it’s about. If you’ve read the book, I’m interested to see what your opinion of it was. If not, was it a conscious choice to avoid it? It’ll be a week or two before I start the book, so no spoilers please, but let me know your thoughts.

If you want to read it, let me know. I bought it for Emily and she said it was a very interesting book. She is strong in her faith and has bought a couple other follow up books that discuss it and I think you would enjoy those.
She said that, had her faith been weak, the book would have greatly affected her. But, because of the other books she read, they went and counter-acted the book. Hard to explain, maybe I should point her to your site and she can discuss it. Anyway, if you want to borrow the book and/or the follow ups, let me know.

yeah, definitely point her this way for some discussion. I actually bought the book tonight, so I won’t need to borrow it, just need to finish my current book first. Barnes and Noble had a pretty big display with all kinds of books countering the book…almost too many. Which follow-ups does she have?

I think what Paul said pretty much sums up my opinion. It was a good book, a quick and intense read. I think the controversy mostly lies in the fact that neither side (what the grail REALLY IS) has been “PROVED.” That’s why I have the opinion that, its an interesting book, as long as you are strong in your faith. It’s scary to think of the people who are not, who can be easily swayed by this book. If they don’t already have a solid base in Christ, then their base may be formed by this book! Yikes!

Hey Chris! Got bored so I decided to check up on your site. I read that a while back, and I loved it. It’s a book to be taken as FICTION. That’s the key to it, if you like interesting novels full of mystery and suspense then it’s great. But there’s that curve to it, some people believe it’s words to be truth. I’d say read it so you can understand why others believe it and what they believe is truth. That’s my advice in any situation dealing with different opinions, it’s always better to know more about as much as we can, at least know what you’re fighting against. Peace.

I had a friend ask me about the book the other day and I have not read it and didn’t really know what to tell her. All I knew was that there was a lot of contraversy on it so I figured it wasn’t all true. If someone who’s read it would be willing to discuss it with her, let me know. She’s not a Christian, but she’s an intelligent girl.

Our preacher discussed it a little the other day, and said it is only good to read to see how the world views things to better equip oneself to witness to others. That was his main view incase you were wondering, otherwise I heard the same in terms of it being controversial. Let me know what you think tho bro.

Chris I have been interested in reading it myself, but havent found the time to purchase and read it. I agree that if you have a strong faith background, then you wont be swayed by books like this or talks about other religions. I think we as Christians need to be open to listen to other ideas on faith and other related topics so that we can understand where others stand and believe to help us relate to them. Also I believe that in some cases we can learn things from other faiths, like enourmous love for family, that we sometimes take for granted or dont put as much emphasis on. I heard a really good talk on Islam on Monday that was eye opening. It didnt make me want to convert but helped me understand what they beleive.

It is a good look at how the World sees Christianity and at how gullible the culture has become. Clearly intended as fiction — the whole idea of a re-discovered Jesus keeps finding new expressions every 25 years or so. This is the latest — Jesus Christ Superstar for the new millenium.
