Refreshed…for now

As I mentioned in this post, this was the weekend for my whitewater rafting trip. All I can say is Woohoo! for fun and adventurous weekends! It was an excellent trip, exactly what I needed. I feel so refreshed right now, in such a great mood, and I hope being back at work doesn’t ruin that too quickly.

Here’s a little recap of the trip…

We arrived at the campground on Saturday night, just in time for dinner. Most of the group were already there, and they were nice enough to have everything already set up for us. :-) There were 30 people that made the trip, most from the BSU at UK (past and present). We ate some hotdogs for dinner and chatted for a while. Once it got dark, 3 of the guys broke out their guitars and we started singing some praise choruses and such before heading off to bed. I’ll leave out the details surrounding some of the guys in another tent… Let’s just say I’m glad I was in the tent I was in.

We woke up Sunday morning to a great day. Sunny and a bit chilly at first, but it warmed up nicely. After eating breakfast, we relaxed and anxiously awaited our 1:30 rafting time. We tossed frisbee, baseball, and football to kill the time. Once 1:30 rolled around, we hopped on the bus out to the New River. There were 4 rafts for our group. David (my bro), Elizabeth (his fiancé), Nick, Paul B., Tracey, and Carrie from our group, and Jeremiah and Josh from another group, were the crew of raft 155, with Laura as the guide. In a funny moment, when Laura asked who wanted to be in the front, both David’s and my hands shot up. That’s the Vaught boys for ya! I think David just wanted to prove himself, to make up for the last time ;-) She asked if we had rhythm and could paddle at the same speed. We reassured her that we could, being brothers and both having been in the marching band. She only had to yell at us a couple times during the trip :-)

After the “class” on the rowing commands and such, we began out journey down the New River. We encountered all levels of rapids, from simple swimming rapids up to a couple Class 5’s. Nothing we couldn’t handle! Throughout the whole adventure, only one of our crew was sent overboard as a result of the rapids or rocks (needless to say, some people we pushed out on purpose, but those don’t count). I think a couple of the other rafts had some problems, though. It’s funny seeing a raft floating down the river with no crew, and a bunch of white helmets drifting around it :-)

Being away from home (and the computer) for a couple days, camping out in the great outdoors, and floating down the river made for a very nice weekend, giving me the refreshment that I needed. Wish it was something I could do more often.

I’ll post pictures in the next week or so. As for now, it’s back to the daily grind and routine. I wonder what my next adventure will be…
