Story Time

[UPDATE: I'm bumping up this thread to see if I can spark interest in it again...]

I like to write. I haven’t done much writing in a long time, though. I really should get back into it, but it’s hard to find the motivation to, especially after a long day of work.

While thinking about this the other day, I had what I hope will be an interesting idea that I want to try out. It’s going to be an on-going story, written by all the readers of this website. I’ll start the story with an opening sentence in the comments. From there, someone else will post a sentence to continue the story. We’ll keep going until the thread dies down, which hopefully will be a while down the road and after a nice long story. We can make it happy or sad, fantasy or fiction, wherever we want to take it, let’s go!

Here are the rules:
- Only one sentence per post
- You must wait for another person to post before you can post again

When you post, try to leave it open ended enough that the story can continue. By this, I mean don’t kill off the main character after only the 5th post :-)

There is potential for things to get out of order if two people post about the same time, but hey, it’ll sure make it interesting!

Let’s have fun and see what we can come up with!

[UPDATE: Since "comments" about the story can't go in the comments section of this post (that's where the story is), I've set up a separate comment/discussion forum for the story. Feel free to post any questions, ideas, etc you may have.]

  1. The sun rose that cold day in March, seemingly like it had every other morning.

  2. However, there just seemed to be something different something strange about how it came to be that morning.

  3. As Graham walked out his front door to his car, he noticed the day seemed different.

  4. His car was gone.

  5. Yet as shocked as he was that the car was gone, there was something else odd about the day, something that was gnawing at the back of his mind but he couldn’t quite embrace.

  6. So he stood there in his driveway where his car was last seen, contemplating the eeriness of the morning.

  7. Suddenly, the cry of an eagle pierced the morning air, a bone-chilling screech that sent a chill down Graham’s spine.

  8. It was at that moment he realized that this wasn’t his house, this wasn’t his driveway, and what had happened to his shoes.

  9. Slowly and barefoot, Graham walked back towards the unfamiliar house, hoping for clues as to what in the world was going on, how he had gotten here - and where exactly was “here.”

  10. He then noticed that the sky was an odd shade of green.

  11. What was it about the color of the sky that reminded him so much of his childhood back home in Topeka Kansas and the advice his father had given him as a young boy.

  12. Continuing to stare at the sky, his thoughts drifted back to Topeka, his family, and his days of youth…

  13. The warm summer days of swimming in farmer Stewart’s pond with his school friends, the way the crisp breeze blew through their home at night, the love he felt from his parents…”ah, I miss those days”, Graham muttered, when a sudden noise from inside the mysterious house startled him, and he removed his green tinted glasses and decided to investigate.

  14. The front door was locked, so he tried peering in the dusty windows to see inside.

  15. As he tried to peer inside the dusty window, his nose began to twitch.

  16. With the twitch came a sneeze and the realization that he was not alone in the yard.

  17. Graham jerked his head around to look behind, but saw nothing.

  18. As he rubbed his neck he thought, “I must be going crazy.”

  19. Graham was startled as he looked at his hand after rubbing his neck.

  20. It was definitely *not* his hand.

  21. “Where did my hand go?” screamed Graham.

  22. And as he screamed, he woke up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily, but realizing it was all a dream - a very, very strange dream.

  23. Could he be certain that it was all just a dream, an unconscious wandering of the mind that he had just been swept through?

  24. But no time to think about his dream for now, the clock said 8:54 and he was late for work!

  25. Quickly showering and dressing, Graham rushed out the door, jumped in his car, and headed off for another week at work.

  26. Lazily banging through the revolving door, Graham moped up to his office.

  27. He came in through the back stairwell, so he didn’t have to walk by Lumberg’s posh corner office.

  28. Trudging along he was heard to ask “Why do I, the main man, the one that does all the work and allows for this place to function get the worst office in the entire building.”

  29. Frowning in Lumberg’s direction as he walked by, Graham headed towards his meager cubicle, situated in the middle of the office between two of the most annoying people he knew and directly under a vent that always seemed to make his cubicle way too hot or way too cold.

  30. Looking at his calendar, he just realized what today was; a day Lumberg, work, conflicting wind currents from the neighboring offices, or the fact he can’t find his stapler, couldn’t ruin.

  31. And with that realization, and catching a glimpse of the beauty that was walking his way, Graham’s mood lifted considerably.

  32. Graham though to himself, “Today is the day…I’m going to ask Marissa to lunch”.

  33. How many times before had he wanted to do this, only to have chickened out at the last minute, but this time was different.

  34. Different because he was wearing his lucky shoes, and heck, the day was already interesting enough so why not ask her?

  35. He decided the best method to talk to her was to “accidentally” meet her at the water cooler.

  36. After drinking 12 cups of water waiting to accidently meet Marissa at the cooler, Skip came by and told Graham that Marissa was fired today by Lumberg for spending too much time at the water cooler and that he best get back to work himself!

  37. Greatly disappointed and still sweating over the encouter that never happened, he trudged back to his desk, grumbling to himself about his dumb luck and wondering what else could possibly go wrong with his day.

  38. After 20 minutes of playing solitaire, the water caught up with him and he slipped off to the bathroom on the 2nd floor, grumbling that his own on the 3rd floor was *still* being repaired.

  39. As he stepped into the second floor from the elevator, his eyes widened at what he saw and he forgot about his urge to go to the bathroom - that or it was already too late…

  40. as the elevator doors opened he saw Marissa making out with Lumberg!

  41. In an extreme fit of rage, Graham pulled out his light saber and went Jedi on both Marissa and Lumberg.

  42. As Graham’s first downward stroke raced towards Lumberg’s neck, it was suddenly blocked by another lightsaber…

  43. Graham then suddenly eats his shoe…
