Two Weeks With No Internet

USAToday reports on a study involving 13 families who gave up Internet access for 2 weeks. The results are almost what you expect them to be, with cell phone bills increasing and people feeling “lost and disconnected.” It’s funny that the article reports the families “rediscovered other media, including TV, newspapers and movies.” Makes you think about how much we’ve come to rely on the ‘Net putting information from around the world right at our finger tips whenever we want it.

Could you do it? Could you give up the Internet for 2 weeks? A month? Maybe only a couple days? I’ve mentioned this before, but I went without touching the Internet, or a computer in general, for 9 days last summer during my vacation and it was very refreshing. It felt great to get away from technology for a while, especially since it seems I’m “hooked” on it too much anymore. It would be a completely different story trying to give up Internet while still being at home, though. At least on the vacation I had exciting and fun things to do. If I was without access while at home during my “normal” routines, I think I’d be driven crazy going more than a couple days without being able to read my blogs, check email, or change my Fantasy Sport lineups!

  1. I think I’d have to be put in the psyche ward (can’t spell I know) from the insanity I would suffer. I don’t think I could go more than a month without touching the internet before i would be groveling for it back lol. However early this summer I was grounded for two weeks and I went a whole week without the internet before I was alllowed to have it back little by little. I was suprised how well I did without it… Sheesh I need to get out more…

  2. When I was went to Florida on vacation last april, I bought a laptop JUST so i could get online. Pathetic right? going to Sanibel Island (pretty close to paradise) and i needed to be online.
Anyway, I get to the island and guess what? No Internet access in our cabin, no cell phone service without driving 5 miles towards mainland.
So…I had a laptop to play pinball on and thats it.
It was nice to get offline for a week though. Don’t think I could handle much longer than that.

  3. It would be very difficult especially being at home. I think vacation is a bit different story because people know that you are out and you are not concerned as much with what is going on at that time.

I was going crazy when I couldnt get my email for 4 straight days. I sometimes cant go without it when I stay in Louisville either. I will admit I am totally addicted.

  4. I don’t know if I could do it. Not only because I do a lot of my “work” on the computer, but I talk to so many people this way. Maybe I’ll try it someday.
