Electoral Vote Predictor

7

electoral-vote.com is a website that predicts how many electoral votes that each Presidential candidate will receive in the upcoming election. The site lists each state as being strong, weak, or barely in favor of a candidate. Right now, the site is predicting that Kerry will win more electoral votes than Bush, 280-254. However, one thing that I find interesting in the predictions is how many more states/electoral votes are strongly in favor of Bush (148) compared to Kerry (112). On the other hand, a lot more of the states/electoral votes are classified as “barely” Kerry (77), while there are just a few that are barely for Bush (29). To me, that just means that the election is still a complete toss-up, since any of the barely Kerry votes can easily go to Bush.

There’s thought and talk of changing the electoral college system and therefore changing how the presdient is selected/voted. Colorado is for instance voting this year on whether or not to change their all or none electoral votes. They are thinking about making the number of votes attained match the popular vote of the state. Is this a good idea or not? What about getting rid of the electoral college and going popular vote completely? Some topics to discuss.

I don’t think it’s any entirely good idea to make the Presidency based on the popular vote. But I also don’t think it should be only based on the electoral college either. Some mixture of the two would be the best, but I’m not exactly sure what that would be. Colorado’s plan sounds interesting, but maybe if we somehow gave points to whoever wins the popular vote in addition to electoral votes. Not sure, just thinking out loud…

  3. David says:

True. That was the reason why the electoral college was created in the first place, because the forefathers thought the common public would not be able to make an educated decision concerning something as important as this. What would be the best situation though.

Have you heard about the proposal from one of the 3rd-party candidates?

IRV (instant run-off voting) or something like that. I don’t know enough details to speak intelligently about it but it is another alternative that has beent talked about.

This would require a.,.. Constitutional amendment, though, so I don’t really foresee that happening anytime soon. But states could change the way they choose their electoral votes, as David mentioned. So IRV or some other alternative could be used to determine who gets the states’ votes.

They must have changed their data, cause now it says Bush will get the votes 274-260. Your right Chris, definitely too close to predict.
