Wanted: Quotes
Well, it’s finally happening…I’m running low on quotes! As many of you know, every Sunday I update the word, verse, and quotes of the week, listed on the right. I’ve been doing this since May (click on the >> to the left of each section to see the archives) and the list of quotes I had collected is starting to run low. If you have some favorite quotes you would like to see posted on this site, message them to me using AIM at VaughtCom (or see the other options, including email, under the “Contact Info” section on the left side). Try not to post them as comments, as that will ruin the “new-ness” of it when I do post them. Thanks readers!

When I get a chance I’ll go through my book of quotes and see what isn’t already in your list… but it might be a while before I make time.

Usage Note: People have been using the noun quote as a truncation of quotation for over 100 years, and its use in less formal contexts is widespread today. Language critics have objected to this usage, however, as unduly journalistic or breezy. As such, it is best avoided in more formal situations. The Usage Panel, at least, shows more tolerance for the word as the informality of the situation increases. Thus, only 38 percent of Panelists accept the example He began the chapter with a quote from the Bible, but the percentage rises to 53 when the source of the quotation is less serious: He lightened up his talk by throwing in quotes from Marx Brothers movies.
