Major Changes/Updates to the Website

As you can probably tell, there’s something different about the site. I’ve done a pretty major overhaul of it. First, I switched the blogging software I was using. Previously, I used Movable Type but I switched over to WordPress. The reasons for this change are numerous, including MT getting slower as more posts and comments were added and WordPress taking up less disk space then MT.

Also, in addition to changing the blogging software, I’ve reworked the design of the site. Most likely, none of you noticed how awful the old site looked in Netscape 4, but it was bad and always bugged me. Additionally, the old site wasn’t XHTML compliant and wasn’t exactly the easiest thing to change upgrade and change around. With this new design, partially implemented by WordPress itself, I can very easily apply different style sheets to the basic code and create a different look.

I know some of you may not like this new design, but just hang on for a bit. I’m actually going to come up with about 3 or so designs and you’ll be able to pick which style you like best and set it as your default.

For the time being, I hope you like what I’ve done with the place. There are all kinds of neat little things here and there that will make your visit better, but I’ll let you find them. ;-)

For the most part, the blog parts of the site should be switched over and working. The Polls aren’t currently working, so those are missing for the time being. You may come across a few broken links and such here and there. If you do, feel free to let me know (post a comment) and I’ll make sure it’s fixed. If you notice something that looks really bad, out of place, or just plain not right, let me know that too. I’ve had some problems with text disappearing on IE on certain posts, but I hope that’s solved… If you notice something that’s missing from the new design that you really miss from the old design, let me know that, too.

Some of the non-blog related sites, such as the Links page, still need to be updated to the new design. That should be done shortly. I got tired of keeping WordPress and MT in sync, so that’s why I’m pushing this out the door now, rather than waiting for it to be completely updated.

Thanks for your patience and enjoy!

  1. I like it. those buttons at the top are nifty. loads quickly too.

  2. You have WAY too much time on your hands…. but I like it.

  3. hmmm… all the nifty stuff on the right side of your page is cutting off your text. i like the design though.

  4. rachel, you’re saying that the post text is overlapped by the the boxes on the right side? What browser, resolution, and OS are you using? Can you send me a screen shot? Thanks. Everything looks fine for my in IE and Firefox. Anyone else seeing this behavior?

  5. Everything looks great here Chris.

  6. Looks good to me. IE 6, 1024×768, xp home

  7. Looks awesome Chris. Except everything loads WAY to slow. It wasn’t this slow before…

  8. Bryan, probably first time loading it will take a while.. but with it in your temp internet files, it should be just as quick

  9. Yeah, it’s deffinitely loading faster than before.

  10. Oh yeah, get some color in it Chris.

  11. Ok, I have to agree with Bryan now. There are times you site doesn’t even load. And other times, when I go to comment it takes a while. But on the other hand, it is a lot fast when it is going ok.

  12. Looks good on FreeBSD 4.9-Release, Opera, 1280×1024.

  13. hey chris, i am having the same type of problem that rachel mentioned. it could very well have something to do with the crappy/slow computer that i have here at work though with my windows 95. geesh.

  14. Well, poop, I guess I’m going to have to go back to the drawing board on this design. Didn’t realize there were so many problems with…

  15. Oh, and Jeremy, don’t worry about the color. As I wrote in the post:

“I’m actually going to come up with about 3 or so designs and you’ll be able to pick which style you like best and set it as your default.”

  16. Jeremy, can you see a pattern when the site doesn’t load? When you say the site doesn’t load, are you meaning that the site has downloaded but nothing displays, or that IE, etc just sits there trying to download the site, but can’t? I’m not entirely sure it’s the design that’s causing the site to not load, but instead it’s my webhost, or high internet/network traffic that would cause that problem…

  17. When it doesn’t load, it’s just the browser trying to connect but can’t. Thats probably your host or a network traffic issue. I haven’t had any more problems with the comment boxes since I posted that, so never mind!

  18. Yay, some good news at least

  19. I don’t know why. But I’m not having any more comment boxes either now.
