Giant Jesus Statue
Take a look at the new “attraction” that is getting attention both locally here in Cincinnati and nationally. It’s a giant Jesus statue, built at Solid Rock Church in Monroe, OH , just off of Interstate 75, about 15 miles north of Cincinnati. What makes this statue different than so many others is that this one is only torso-up, with arms extended heaven-ward. It’s 62 feet tall, with a 42-foot span between upraised hands and made of styrofoam and fiberglass over a steel frame.
What are your thoughts on this statue? It’s interesting that one of the articles listed below reports that in a poll of locals: “25% feel that it is a ‘Godsend, good for Monroe,’ while 75% found that it was an ‘Eyesore, bad for Monroe.’”
You can read more about this statue and what the community (including Larry Flynt of Hustler magazine) thinks about it at the following links:

i personally don’t care for it. i drove by it a number of times as it was being built. I just think its a little over the top.

It is sad how perceptions in this country have changed. 75% of the people polled in Monroe feel that a religious landmark is an eyesore and maybe something unacceptable. But a Hustler bookstore and Bristols are acceptable. The moral standards in this country is virtually non existent. Anymore a Christian lifestyle is looked down upon much like a sinful lifestyle was looked down upon 20 years ago. I guess those people feel living for God is just too strict and doesn’t fit into their lives. A billboard featuring Victoria Secret models prancing around in their underwear is viewed as cool and acceptable because sex sells. But a statue of greatest man to walk this earth who offers hope and peace is viewed as an eyesore. What a shame considering this country was founded on Christian beliefs.

All because someone thinks a huge statue is an eyesore means they aren’t religious or have no moral values? Strong statement. I agree that the US has a moral issues problem, but not liking a statue doesn’t mean the same thing.
Also, what makes it a landmark?

Ok Paul…I never implied that because they think it is an eyesore that they don’t have moral values. But I don’t believe they have strong Christian values. Considering that this same township doesn’t seem to complain much about the adult industry in their town, I would bet most of the dislike has to do with the statue being religious in nature. I was making an observation about the moral fabric of this country from my perspective. It is not the statue but what the statue represents that is causing the stir.

Sean I also thought you were implying that because someone didn’t like the statue that they had no moral values. Maybe it’s just too big, or maybe it needs to be in a different part of the city. On a personal opinion I don’t think that you have to be “Cristian” to have moral values. Some people have a different definition of what a “Cristian” is. Too some it is an actual religion, to others it is a group of religions that have the most of the same beliefs. And I think it’s teh statue thats causing the stir, not the representation of the statue…

I agree with Scott. Just because someone does or does not like the statue doesn’t mean that they are or are not a Christian. It goes well beyond that. I also agree that it’s the statue causing the stir, not that it’s a “religious” symbol. I think that most people that don’t like it do so because it’s an “eye-sore,” not because they are “anti-Christian.” Obviously, I can’t speak for those people, but that’s the feeling that I get from what I’ve read and seen about it.

I am a Christian and I have values, and that statue has nothing to do wit hchristian values. It is a publicity stunt by a church to draw attention to themselves, and it has worked. How much do you think that it cost to build that statue? Over 2 million dollars, I think that the church could have found a much better use of Gods money!
