The Cost of the 12 Days of Christmas

Each year, the advisors at PNC Bank have calculated the cost of all the goods and services bought by the “True Love” in the classic “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

This year, the “true cost” of items is $66,334, up from $65,264 in 2003. The 3 French Hens tripled in cost this year, rising from $15 last year to $45 this year. The Turtle Doves and Gold Rings were about a third cheaper this year, compared to last year.

Interestingly, PNC determined the costs of the goods and services several different ways. They did it cumulatively, as the song goes, with a full 364 items (12 partridges, 22 turtle doves, etc). They also did it as a price index, i.e. one time through the song (1 partridge, 2 turtle doves, etc). Additionally, they determined the cost of the items as if they were bought over the internet. That total comes to $115,460 this year, up from $101,206 last year
