Asia quake, tsunamis

In case you haven’t heard about this yet…

From CNN.com: Asia quake, tsunamis kill 4,800

Massive tsunamis triggered by the largest earthquake to shake the planet in over 40 years have wiped out coastal areas across southeastern Asia, killing more than 4,800 people — most of them in Sri Lanka and India.

The initial quake, measuring 8.9 in magnitude, struck about 100 miles (160 km) off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra island around 7 a.m. Sunday (0000 GMT), according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center.

It is the fifth largest earthquake in recorded history, according to the NEIC.

Some other sources (Reuters and the AP) are reporting more than 7000 dead.

Please be in prayer for the familes of the victims as well as the survivors.

[UPDATE: Wow, now they're saying close to 10,000 deaths...]

  1. There have also been people injured and killed on the East African coast due to this earthquake too. Maybe not quite the massive amounts of people in Asia, but that’s pretty amazing for an earthquake near Indonesia to cause water to rise 2 m (about 6 feet) in Mogadishu and bring waves 3 km inland! That helps me see the magnitude of 8.9!!

  2. Ooh, I meant to give you a link:

  3. Holy cow…now they’re saying 22,000 were killed in nine countries. More than a million people were displaced, with 250,000 homeless. I can’t imagine what it’s like over there. And I’m sure diseases will kill many more over time. Wow…

  4. 55,000 and still rising. I’m still in shock…
