Worst Date

Ashlee has a post on her blog that made me think of this of this topic.

Worst dates! Man, those days of dating could bring some highs and lows, joys and frustrations. Several dates really stick out in my mind, and probably always will.

My worst date? It was with a girl name Kera (name changed to protect her identity ;-) ) my senior year of high school and it was all my fault. Back then, I wasn’t as smooth as I am now (no laughing!) and I apparently wasn’t thinking very well that day either. I didn’t have much cash and needed to stop by the ban. Since Kera lived close to me, I thought I’d pick her up first, then go to the bank (big no-no guys…). So I picked her up and off we went to the bank. Well, I was too busy trying to talk to her, that I drove right by the bank. Doh! So I went to the next intersection, pulled into a parking lot and attempted to turn around and go back (this is at the corner of Turfway and Dixie, for those of you who know this area). It’s a very busy intersection, so I had trouble getting out of the lot. Finally, getting frustrated, I pulled out when I saw a small gap in traffic. Too small! A big truck was barreling down on us, horn blaring. Luckily, it didn’t hit us, but came a little too close for comfort. I was a *tad* embarrassed and Kera was quite scared. Not a good start to the date. We made it to the bank finally, and I withdrew the much needed money (at least I realized I needed cash before I had to pay for something) and we headed to O’Charley’s for lunch. I was feeling more relaxed, thank goodness, and she was still talking to me, which was a good sign. We ordered food and chatted some. The conversation wasn’t flowing all that well, so when the food came, there was a lot of silence. I’m a fast eater, and as hard as I try to eat slow, I still seem to finish before most other people. Being nervous that day, I didn’t really focus on eating slowly as I tried desperately to think about things to talk about. Needless to say, I finished my meal waaay before she did. Man, that was awkward, sitting there and watching her eat, Kera sitting there trying to eat as I watched her, both of us trying to think of things to talk about. She finally got full, or annoyed, and called it quits on her meal without finishing it all. I didn’t want to end the date there (I wanted a chance to redeem myself), so I asked her if she wanted to do something else. She said she didn’t care, but didn’t seem all that enthusiastic about it. In a remarkable moment of brilliance, I realized that I really wanted to get a CD, so I thought we’d go to the mall and walk around some. Kera said sure, humoring me.. So, I paid the bill (with the money that I now had!) and off we went to the mall. Not knowing where to start, I made a beeline for the CD store, with Kera tagging along behind. After getting my CD, I was happy, but then realized here we are at the mall and I hate shopping. I got what I needed so I asked her if she needed to go anywhere. She said no, she didn’t have any money to spend, so we left. At a loss for something else to do, and with her not looking like she was having fun, I took her home. In case you’re wondering, that was the only date we went on. Kera was a really nice girl, and we had gotten along great when we hung out in group settings, which is why I asked her out to begin with. I completely blew our one-on-one date, though. When I asked a friend about her a week or so later, she was back with an ex-boyfriend.

A close second to that worst date was prom night my senior year of high school. It involved getting lost (twice), getting into an accident (my fault), almost missing prom entirely, being sick, and nearly spraining my ankle. Prom wasn’t quite as bad because the girl and I got along a lot better and had been out several times before.

Girls, if you want to have a great date, look me up :-/

At least I can say I learned a lot from that date, especially from my guy friends, who laughed at me and called me a moron when I told them the story. Thankfully, I’ve matured since then (at least I *think* so) and am more thoughtful on (and before) dates nowadays.

Contrary to how it may seem, I’ve had some truly remarkable dates, too. Maybe I’ll share my best date next time. I’ve got a couple that could qualify, so I’ll have to sit down and think about ‘em.

What was your worst date? I’m interested to hear from you all on this, so don’t be afraid to leave comments. Leave them anonymously if you want. Maybe I’ll share the infamous prom story if there’s good feedback on the topic :-)

  1. Don’t worry Chris… I’ll be the Ladies Man you never were at Ryle! I’m scoring dates every weekend lol! You belive me right, Chris? I’m such a ‘player’ huh!? ;-) Oh, geesh, I embarress myself. If only I had David’s charm lol!

  2. mine would have to deal with a friend of mine who tried to impress me by drinking 12 different kinds of beer and then bringing me to his house where the *cough* porn was in his living room alphabetized with all his other DVDs. that’s impressive.

  3. Wow, that’s funny, and embarassing I would imagine. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Err… Do the events that took place with Jamie count as a date? lol…

  5. I think my worst date would be a little after high school and my best friend from high school set me up with her cousin and we double dated. The date wasn’t so bad itself, but the company was not my cup of tea. This guy, his name has left me, had a tattoo of a naked woman on his arm, smoked-let me just tell ya folks from this end it doensn’t get any better-speaking sarcastically of course. I asked my best friend about him later and she claimed she didn’t know about the tattoo or the smoking, but even then this guy wasn’t one of the cutest guys I’d ever laid eyes on either-he looked like a big grizzly bear with his big beard-it scared me.

  6. Prom JR year…I actually ended up asking a guy in my class to go to prom with me, if not the teachers were going to start setting us up with dates. The evening started off well, a couple of the guys went to rent a limo to take us to dinner and then the dance. It was my first and only ride in a limo.
The dance went okay. He didnt like to dance much though I wasnt a big dancer myself though I did get out there and have some fun during all songs. He ended up sitting at a table during most of the fast song.
After prom, we went to a classmates parents house and hung out all night til morning with about 15 of our classmates and dates. The guy that I went with ended up hitting on all the other girls at the party all night and not talking to me. Another classmate of mine had to take me home in the morning because my date had left me.

(Not like it was any official date but still, I thought slightly inconsiderate. Luckily, I had another classmate that was a very kind young man.)
