Employment Opportunity

I got offered a job today, a full-time position at a company in the medical industry. I should be joyful, but instead, I’m hesitant and not sure I’ll take it. The position is *not* IT related and I’ll be taking a pretty substantial pay cut. The benefits package is nice, but doesn’t make up for the low pay. If I take the position, I would probably need to find a part time job, and working two jobs is not something I’m really looking forward to. Also, I have a friend that works there and who initially passed my name and résumé onto management. In itself, that’s great, but if I take the position then find a better paying IT position and quit, it would reflect badly on her, and might strain the friendship. I say this to point out that I wouldn’t feel right taking the job now, to hold me until I find something better (which could be as soon as a couple weeks or it could take a couple months), then quitting when I do. If I take the job, I’m there for a while.

There are two IT Staffing firms that are also helping me find a job. One of these firms has said that they have 2 possible positions for me, but details of those positions haven’t been hammered out completely yet. It could be a fullt-time position or a 2-3 week contract position (but possibly full-time afterwards if they like my work)

Do I take the lesser paying, non-IT, but full-time job at the medical company, or do I hold out for a potential job in the IT field that pays well, but may be short term? Please be in prayer for me about this decision.

  1. Chris its not an easy decision to make. When I graduated from college, I had a job offer upon graduation. The thing is it wasnt programming in a language or seem to have potential to lead me where I wanted to go. It wasnt as hard of a decision then as it would be now to make, but I passed up that opportunity. Then I waited for nearly 4+ months before another job offer was granted to me. Though that was during the downturn of the technology world and jobs were not as abundant as they are becoming today.

You have to take a look at your life and where you are headed. Also look at what does God want you to do. Read Lindsey latest post. Listening to God is really hard and understanding what He is saying is sometimes even harder.

I wish you the best of luck. I will pray for you as you make this decision. Its definitely not easy.

  2. That is a tough decision to make. Have you talked to your friend who reccomended you? Do you know anything about the turnaround for the possition you are thinking of taking (eg: is it anything like the clerk position of your old place of work? ;) ).
Do you know the companies for the two possible IT jobs? Weren’t you thinking about getting a job that is non-IT? Is there any vertical or horizontal movement with the medical company?

  3. The people who interviewed me did say that the turnover rate was kinda high…

There’s potential for vertical and horizontal movement in the medical company (much more than at CP), but I’m not sure how far.

Yep, I’m open to a non-IT job, but it’s really just programming that I want to stay away from. I don’t mind working with hardware or networking, etc.

Nope, don’t know the companies for the IT positions. Recruiter is keeping that info to himself right now.

As of now, I’m thinking about taking the job. It’s income, and with my tax refund, I should be okay for a while. Maybe, in a couple months, I can move on to another, better paying job without feeling guilty. I just hate to turn down a sure thing…

  4. My thought is to take it. It may be available for a reason, and the reason why you don’t know more information from the other potentials also could be for a reason. I’m praying for you bro, there are some others down here praying for you as well.

  5. Take the job or die….
