Tourney Time

Ah, yes, it’s my favorite time of year, time for the NCAA college basketball tournament. The field of 65 was just released and it looks like it’s going to be another fun and dramatic year.

Here’s a rundown of the seedings for local teams:

  • Kentucky - #2 in Austin Region
  • Louisville - #4 in Albuquerque Region
  • Cincinnati - #7 in Austin Region
  • Ohio - #13 in Syracuse
  • Eastern KY - #15 in Austin Region

See the complete bracket at CBS Sportsline

My quick hit thoughts on the brackets:

Louisville a 4 seed??? Wow, I thought they’d be a 2 seed, 3 at the lowest.

Washington a #1 seed? I hadn’t even considered it, but makes sense now that I think about it.

SEC gets 5 teams in (UK, LSU, FL, AL, and Miss St), and I bet at least 3 will lose in the first round.

Wow, KY gets some interesting (potential) matchups:

  • UK and Eastern KY (coached by former UK player Travis Ford) in the first round
  • UK and Cincy matchup in the second round (been looking forward to this matchup for years now)
  • UK and Utah in Regional semi-final (how many times have we knocked them out of the tourney)
  • UK and Duke in Regional Final (their games always seem to be instant classics)
  • UK and UNC in Final Four (this matchup is always thrilling, too)

The second round could be trouble for UK, but if we get by UC/Iowa, we should make it to the Elite Eight. (Knock on wood…) I do have a bad feeling about the tourney, though. As bad as UK is playing right now, we could be out in the second round again. Hopefully, the team will pull it together and make a run.

Vote now: How far do you think UK will advance in this year’s tournament?

I think UNC will win it all. I’ll post my bracket picks soon. What are your thoughts on the tournament?

  1. I am surprised at Louisville being a #4 also. Should be a 2 or 3.

I see 4 of the SEC teams will win their first round games. I see Miss. St. losing.

Love the potential matchups that UK has: EKU, UC, Duke, UNC, Syracuse, Utah. They should get to the Elite 8. Working on my bracket now (and probably will tweak for the next few days)

If you click on this link, it goes to the ESPN Tournament Challenge, National Bracket which is a compilation of everyone that has entered their Tourney Challenge so far.

It has Illionis, Duke, UNC and Wake in the Final 4, with UNC with a 3% edge over Illionis in the Final.

  2. You know, looking at the matchups a little closer, the SEC should actually do better in the first round this year, as opposed to the previous years. UK, FL, LSU, and AL *should* all win the first round (don’t think Miss St will). AL vs UW-Milwaukee is a 5 vs 12 matchup, though, and it seems at least on 12 seed pulls it out every year. AL could be that victim this year.

My final four, at this point in time, is AZ, UL, UNC, and Duke. A couple out on the limb choices there, and I reserve the right to change my mind. ;-) My Elite 8 teams are UL and Gonzaga, Illinois and Arizona, UNC and UConn, and Duke and UK.

  3. I agree with my brother on the precarious situtation UK has found itself as of lately. I thought the loss to Florida to end the regular season would have got them fired up and ready to go….aparently not. But I’ll trade a SEC tourney title for a NCAA title anyday. WE have 25 of them anyway, so rather work on getting the NCAA titles up there.

  4. Good bracket, hard to find many objections, but I’ll throw a few out there. Yes, Louisville should have been a three, possibly a two. Four was not good. Pitino should be mad.

UAB should not have gotten in. I would have put Notre Dame in before UAB, but I really thought a second MAC team should have gotten in. That conference has been solid all year, very evenly matched. They reward the ACC and SEC for being in a tough evenly matched conference, but they punished the MAC. Miami OH or Buffalo should have been in.

I thought Ga Tech got too high of a seed, thought they should have gotten a 6 or 7.

Other than that… I think it was one of the better brackets I’ve seen. No real team can cry and say they should have been in. Yes, their were some cases for some other teams over say UAB or Northern Iowa, but nothing like we’ve seen in the past.
