The New Church

A friend of mine, a young pastor who recently started a church, talks to me from time to time about the new face of church in America - about the postmodern church. He says the new church will be different from the old one, that we will be relebant to culture and the human struggle. I don’t think any church has ever been relevant to culture, to the human struggle, unless it has believed in Jesus and the power of His gospel. If the new church believes in trendy music and cool Web pages, then it is not relevant to culture either. It is just another tool of Satan to get people to be passionate about nothing.

From Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality by Donald Miller

Wow, that sure hits me hard. Trendy music and cool web pages are something that I tend to look at as I struggle to find a church home. And while I don’t consciously make a decision about that church purely based on this criteria, they probably figure more into my judgement than they should.

  1. heh, i really didn’t want to hear that. But it does make you think… I never thought about it that way… Though I do think that guy exagerates some…

That doesn’t seem like it is happening in reality…. The trendy music and cool websites… Well those things help me get closer to, and understand God better. And I think for the most part it is that way for everyone…
