Bullet Update

Here’s an update on the freaky incident I woke up to on Friday.

This is a shot of the bullet, with a battery and ruler for scale:

Bullet

I couldn’t immediately get on the roof to look for a bullet hole since I didn’t have a ladder tall enough to reach to the section of roof where it supposedly entered. On Friday night, though, my dad brought over his ladder and took a look. He did indeed find a bullet hole and that’s when everything started making sense.

If you look closely at most roofs, you’ll see the peak of the roof has something that looks like this:

Bullet

I can’t remember the technical name of it, but essentially it’s a vent for the attic and area under the roof. Since heat rises, it builds up in this section of the house and needs an outlet through which it can be released. Under the material in the picture above, there’s actually gap in the wood of the roof through which the heat can escape. The cap is there to prevent rain and such from getting into the house.

And this is where the bullet entered. It went through the cap, through the gap in the wood and proceeded through the attic and the ceiling.

Bullet

Now that makes more sense! The bullet never encountered wood and the cap was thin enough that it didn’t slow down the bullet all that much, allowing it to make it as far as it did. And who knows, there could have been more bullets that hit the house but hit the wood portion/shingle portion of the roof instead, which prevented them from entering the house. I’m going to check the gutters to see if there are any more…

  1. I believe it is called the ridge cap or the ridge vent. What a frightening episode and at the same time somewhat amazing.
My question would be did you check the bullet? It could be the magic bullet from the JFK assination because it is pretty amazing the bullet had the right trajectory to make it thru your roof and land on your steps. Glad to hear no one was hurt.
