Google Talk

Google has launched Google Talk, it’s entry into the world of Instant Messaging.

They say talk is cheap. Google thinks it should be free. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world. Google Talk offers you:
* Choice: Get in touch how and when you want to–over email, IM or a call
* Quality: Talk through your computer but hear your friends as if they were in the same room
* Convenience: Your Gmail contacts are pre-loaded into Google Talk so inviting or talking to your friends is just a click away

Google Talk is based on Jabber and is open source, meaning that this is going to be big when it comes to enhancing and building upon the program that was released. Currently, Google Talk is in beta, so it has a lot of room to grow.

All you need to use Google Talk is a gmail account and an Instant Messaging client that is compatible such as Gaim, iChat or Google Talk’s own program. I’m on Google Talk now using Gaim, so look me up at kyblogger.

  1. not to be completely computer ignorant… Wait. I am computer ignorant, so I can ask this. What’s gmail?

  2. Actually, the correct thing to say is its based on the XMPP protocol because the phrase Jabber is a registered trade mark of Jabber, Inc. (They just never followed up on anyone calling their own product jabber) :)

  3. GMail is Google’s free web based email service. They were teh first to offer 1 gig of email storage, which prompted all the other freemail services to do the same or better.

  4. Thank you, Paul C. I did not know Google had an email service.

  5. New question: Do you have to have this Gmail thing to use the Google Talk?

  6. Yes, you have to have a Gmail account to use Google Talk. Unfortunately, you still need an invite to get a gmail account, so I’ll send you one.

  7. I’ve also got a bunch that i can give out
