Those good ol’ Muppets may be making a comeback to TV! Woohoo! However, I’m not to sure about the idea behind it.

ABC will bring the Muppets back to TV for an all new 6-episode series titled “America’s Next Muppet”. The short-run reality-TV spoof is sure to be a fun and entertaining series that Muppet fans will enjoy.

The reported premise is that Kermit and the other classic Muppet characters are setting up a talent contest to find the newest member of the legendary Muppet troupe. All kinds of new wacky Muppet characters and wild new Muppet acts will audition for the panel of judges (such as Kermit, Miss Piggy and Gonzo) who will be the reviewing the performances.

As all Muppet shows, the series will also show the existing Muppet gang in action as they try to hold the auditions and organize the challenges on the show. Some reports even say that Disney is working to make the show “interactive” by allowing viewers to vote for their favorite characters in that week’s episode.

There’s potential that this idea could be really great, with lots of fun and comedy, but it could also crash and burn. I don’t like that they’re jumping on the reality bandwagon and wish it was more original and not a parody, but we’ll see. Nothing’s set in stone yet. If things go as scheduled, we should see the Muppets in action during the spring or summer of 2006.
