Mahna Mahna
Do you all know that Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper where a couple is on a date in a restaurant? The guy appears to be the perfect guy until she gets her Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, then you hear “Mahna Mahna.”
That song has been stuck in my head all week, much to the chagrin of my co-workers. 
So on Saturday afternoon, I finally have a chance to sit down and watch some of The Muppet Show - Season One (Special Edition) DVD and to my surprise, the very first sketch on the very first episode on that DVD was…Mahna Mahna! (On a side note, this episode was actually the 17th episode that season, but the first one filmed…I think) I had no clue that this was actually a song or was used elsewhere, thinking it was done just for the Dr Pepper commercial. Apparently I have just been living in a cave, though, since several other people knew the Muppets had made it popular. This episode was first aired in 1976 and the song was sung by Mahna Mahna and two Snowths (a blend of the words ’snout’ and ‘mouth’).

The song was also reborn as the Phenomena song in episode 7 of Muppets Tonight in 1996 and was performed by Dr. (Sandra) Bullock the Animal Psychiatrist, who was visited by Kermit. Kermit’s problem was that he saw strange creatures whenever he said the word “phenomena”…

I can’t believe you’ve never heard that song before! I would have thought for sure that you would have heard me or Leslie start doing it at one point or another. The commercial is pretty funny, though!

I’m disappointed that you don’t remember this from GSP. We (you, Eileen, and I) sang it after they played it at one of our dances.

Holy cow, I totally don’t remember that, Jen! What dance was it - the outside in the circle area? When during GSP was it (week 2,3, etc?) Wow, I can’t believe I don’t remember that at all. Maybe that’s why it’s been stuck in my head since I first saw that commercial - I really did have a memory of it buried deep in my subconscious.

I LOVE that Muppet sketch! Ben will sometimes start singing that song out of the blue (right now as I type this as a matter of fact).

I don’t remember what week it was, but it was outside in the circle area. I don’t remember a lot, but I remember “American Pie” and “Mahna, Mahna”
