Branching Out for New Tastes
Those of you who know me know that I can be a picky eater. Well, maybe picky isn’t the right word, but diet doesn’t branch out too far from meat and potatoes and pasta. And pizza!
I’m not much for vegetables beyond green beans and corn. Seafood was on the list of things to avoid as I grew up.
I’m not sure where some of these dislikes came from considering I haven’t even tried some of the foods that I think I don’t like!
Lately though, I’ve been trying to expand my horizons and give my taste buds a dose of something different. While in South Carolina a couple years ago, I tried shrimp and grouper for the first time. Since then, I’ve tried other varieties of shrimp, as well as calamari, Green River catfish and a few other types of fish. I’ve enjoyed my tastes of shrimp, and though the other fish wasn’t bad, I still prefer a nice steak or chicked instead.
Since I’ve been at PPD, I’ve had the opportunity to experience “foreign” food. I’ve had Chinese many times in my life and like it, but I can’t remember having any other overseas cuisine. Some of my co-workers are fans of Thai and Indian food, and when they found out that I had never had it…well, they made sure to fix that.
I’ve had Indian and Thai food several times each now and while I can do without Indian food, the Thai was pretty good.
What’s next? Who knows, but at least I’m finally willing to give new tastes a test!

Ok, somehow the “required name” field had “Chris” as the required name. I submitted the above comment.

Who’s I?….that would be my wife. Good to see you are branching out some and trying some different cuisines. Just think of all those yummy treats you could have tried and made routine leading up to this point. And to think you doubted all those things I would eat growing up. If you are willing to try those alternate tastes, we can definately show you some nice places to eat down here in Nash Vegas.

Mmm…Thai food is great! Now that you are trying new things, I’ll have to introduce you to some southern dishes. How does deer, rabbit, and squirrel sound? Well…I promise they are better than they sound.

Lol, Jeremy, they probably all taste like chicken

I like Thai food. Ashlee’s a big fan of Indian. I tend to wonder with that sort of thing how close we are getting to ‘genuine’. I guess I think that more about Chinese buffets than other ethnic restaurants. I’ve heard they’re pretty… different.

Emily and I had Thai food last night. Man was it HOT. We go to Teak in mount adams in OH. Good prices, excellent selection of Sushi if you like that kind of thing. There’s something else you need to try Chris! Now you just need to have Mexican more often. Margarita’s Burrito Supreme (steak for me, Chicken for emily).

Lol…how do you know that chicken doesn’t taste like them
I guess I don’t want to push you too fast!! I just got a dehydrator, so maybe we’ll just start with deer jerky!

Okay, so the wife has taken over my laptop. That was me that posted previously.
One food I can assure you that you don’t want to try is frog legs. Had them last April in Florida. Ugh…tasted terrible!!

I forget where we get the Thai food, but we went to eat at Ambar’s in Clifton on Friday night. I’ve also had Indian food from Amol’s, which is also in Clifton.
I don’t think I’ve ever had beef jerky, much less deer jerky

i second going to teak in mt. adams. it is super yummy, and i like how you can specify the “hotness”. not all thai places do that.

I love frog legs. There was a chef at NKU that made them on the last day the dorms were open my freshman year. I think I ate 3 plates full! Of course, I was the only one eating them!!

You’ve never had beef jerkey?? man you are missing out! Next time I get some from New York, I’ll have to give you some. The Terriyaki and BBQ they have up there is awseome

I love most international foods. Honestly, one of the most popular (also most Americanized) is my least favorite. I like Bosnian food (cabbage and meat are used a lot), Indian (which isn’t too far off from what I had with Indians in Kenya and here), Ethiopian (also pretty close to the real thing) and Thai (though I don’t try too many different things- I just love Chicken Pad Thai and struggle to try anything else b/c I love it so much). Also, I think that the more you try it the more you might find you like it. I hated Ethiopian the first time I had it but now I like it. Buffets are great b/c you can try so many things, but sometimes they’re a little more Americanized.

I just love food.
