Career Interests
I don’t know about you, but my current job/career path is not anywhere close to what I thought it would be when I was a child. (Probably because computers weren’t exactly prevalent back then…
) I’ve gone through quite a few phases since I was a young dreamer and idealist.
My first major “what-I-want-to-do-when-I-grow-up” thoughts involved dinosaurs. This was in elementary school and I had a ton of dinosaur books, toys, etc. I wanted to one day dig up bones and put them together. I eventually outgrew these thoughts, though.
In middle school, I became interested in electronics and robots. In my social studies class one year, we were tasked with making a practical invention. I built one of those personal fans, but added an attachment to spray water. I remember taking apart my remote control cars and many other things as I tried to build a robot. Never happened…
Music was my next phase, early in high school. I was in concert band, pep band and my fave - marching band. I hoped to be a musician one day. There was a problem, though - I wasn’t very good.
Luckily, I realized in time that music would be something that I would enjoy as a hobby rather than career.
My latter years in high school I became interested in psychology. I had three psych classes my junior and senior years and loved what I was learning. I had a fun teacher who made the learning material interesting and enjoyable. (That was Mr. Demler for those of you who went to Ryle.) I took some additional classes my first semesters of college and thought that social psychology was what I wanted to do.
This is when the geek bug hit me, though. I had my first computer programming class my freshman year at Georgetown, to meet a gen. ed. requirement, and the rest is history. I enjoyed the logic, problem solving and technology aspects of programming and computer science, so that became my major and is what I’m doing today.
However, my varying interests didn’t stop there. During my junior year at Georgetown, I took some economics and accounting classes, intending on a minor in business. I loved them! I’ve always been a numbers guy (though not a calculus or advanced math guy) and these disciplines really hit home. I had a great econ teacher (Robin, do you remember his name? I forget…) who made our material practical and relevant to daily events. My transfer to NKU put a damper on my business minor, but the things I learned stuck with me and I might end up doing something in that area some day in the future - like owning my own business.
So, what about you? Is your current career/job what you thought it would be? What other areas have you been interested in pursuing throughout your life?

Haha, I am WAY off.
I grew up wanting to be an Architect. From when I was like 7-8 I wanted to do that. I used to build these amazing Lego houses that were awesome. I loved it. When I doodled I drew houses and floor plans. My freshman year in HS I got an exception to be in a drafting class and drew a complete set of house plans. I was going to go to Georgia Tech or Vanderbilt.
I am not sure what happen to that. I think I realized I liked to doodle and draw and make house plans, but hated math.
I don’t know where I am now, and not sure where I want to go.

I remember wanting to be a nurse when I was little b/c I love helping people, then that turned to teaching. In college I really excelled with the “Arts” and momentarily considered being an artist/dancer/actor. I am now a teacher and I don’t know if the whole “artsy” career would have suited me b/c I do truly enjoy helping others and I have really enjoyed kids especially. Big Smiles!
P.S. We missed you at swing Thursday-Mindy was there and I hadn’t seen her in a while.

i had a love for geology and earth sciences in high school and part of college, but didn’t care for chemistry so I didn’t go that route. Changed to business management, then to comp sci, then changed schools and went for bus. management, and changed to cmis later on.
I always thought, up until I went to college, that I would have been in earth science or geology…then i was bit by the geek bug.
Still wouldn’t mind trying something new out later on down the road, but I’ll stay where I am for now.

I still can’t believe you liked Mr. Demler so much. And I guess to answer the little question about what you hope to do outside of the current career choice. Landscaping and/or a bed and breakfast. You could always came for a visit Chris. We’ll have beds at a bed and breakfast, not just a couch, though having couches for beds would be a different type of bed and breakfast.

Wasn’t Demler your track of baseball coach? Or was that Nieme?
Hah, you open a bed and breakfast? I’m having a little trouble picturing that (though not for Elizabeth), so I’ll definitely come check it out. Make sure you have sheets for your guests, too

Demler was my baseball coach. Nieme was the basketball coach, and my track coach was an elementary gym teach ridell. But he sure knew how to train runners and knew a lot about running in general.
