Kings Island

This past Sunday was my company’s family picnic. This year it was at Kings Island. (Last year it was at Coney Island.)

The weather was great and so was the companionship for the day. I invited my friend Carrie to attend as a thanks for helping me run the 5K, but unfortunately she got sick and left after only a couple hours. For the rest of the day, I met up with some co-workers and friends - Jenee’, Jason and Adam. Good times! We did a tour of the park, hitting as many rides as we could and rode just about all of them that we wanted to. Thankfully, the park wasn’t very crowded. We rode The Beast, my favorite coaster, twice. A couple people in our group had never ridden The Son of Beast, but I wasn’t about to ride it. That ride hurts! It’s so rough and jerky, I find no pleasure from riding it. I’ve ridden it a few times, and that was plenty for me.

And it turned out to be a good thing that we didn’t ride it.

A little before 5pm that day, the ride was closed after “riders described feeling a big jolt.” 27 people were sent to the hospital with various injuries, from welts and difficulty breathing to bloody noses and a broken chest bone.

Read more about this incident on enquirer.com. or cincinnati.com.

Makes you really think how close you are to injury, or worse, every time you get on a ride…

After a day of enjoying rides, we headed over to the picnic grove and some pretty good (and free) food. They drew names for prizes and I won a portable DVD player at the picnic!

Congratulations to Adam for being one of 9 people selected as for the Innovator and Leadership award! He gets to go with the other eight on a team building trip to the Purple People Bridge Climb. Needless to say I’m jealous! He deserves it though, for all the hard work he’s put in and all the stuff he’s put up with lately.

There are a couple pictures up in the gallery.

  1. I haven’t been to King’s Island in quite a bit over a decade. Just a few weeks ago, I was checking it out on Google Maps just to see how much of it I still remembered (albeit, from a completely different perspective than birds-eye!).

Looks like you had a great time!

  2. You know, we were actually reminiscing about the the many rides that have come and gone over the years - Skylab, the Eagle swings, the old time cars, the Smurf Ride, Phantom Theater, etc. A lot has changed…

  3. you are forgetting the king cobra… one of my favorites of all time! and the old time cars were called the tin lizzies. didn’t a car go off the track or something? one of my coworkers’ girlfriend was at the park that day too.

  4. I knew I was forgetting something! Good call, Nicky. That was the first coaster I ever rode.

  5. So the king cobra is not there anymore? What replaced it, and why? I can think of many other rides they should get rid of before some of the other ones they have canned.

  6. Delirium replaced the King Cobra. I don’t know why. Guess the cobra wasn’t considered fun enough anymore…

  7. Dude, SoB front car is barely jerky. I’ve been trying to tell you that for how many years now? And it will NEVER be as shakey as it was opening night.

  8. Yeah, I know the front car is less jerky, same with the Beast, but SoB still kills me. It’s not worth waiting in line for the front car. Especially now that they’re having more problems, more frequently. I doubt I’ll ride it again.
