Ubuntu

I won’t be posting much in the coming week as I work on getting PC back into shape. As I tend to do every so often (sometimes it feels like too often), I’ve wiped my system and I’m starting from scratch. I think it’s been a little over a year and things were getting clunky, cluttered and just had that ugh feel to it. Time for a fresh start!

I’m going a different route this time. This round, I’m going to attempt to go strictly Linux, specifically Ubuntu. I think this is the third “flavor” of Linux that I’ve used, having previously tried Suse and Fedora Core. Those weren’t bad, but I had trouble with getting some software and hardware working with it. I actually reformatted on Sunday and had Ubuntu up and running not long after. There were no problems detecting my hardware and messing with the settings, installing packages and such didn’t take long to figure out.

I’m still in the early stages, though. I have Firefox and Thunderbird up and running with all my previous files, settings, etc. moved over. The hard part will come when I try installing drivers and software for my mp3 player, games, and other applications. I have installed the latest version of Wine, a Windows emulator, for those programs that don’t have *nix version available, so hopefully getting everything else up and running won’t be too hard. If World of Warcraft can work on Wine, which it does, then I have hope that just about anything will!

Previously, when I had the goal of switching to Linux as a primary boot, it latest maybe a week. I’m gonna go all out this time, though. I do have a second computer that has Windows XP and Vista installed, though…just in case. ;-)

I know this sounds like Greek to most of you, so to summarize - my posting frequency will be down over the next week. :-)

  1. i’m gonna say this and when i do, know that it is with all due respect: you are such a nerd… with all due respect, of coarse.

  2. I thought your mom liked nerds, so I’m trying to be a better one :-) Oh, and at least this nerd can spell, of course…

  3. schut upp. ey kan spel jusd fyne. jurck. :-)

  4. I agree with nickmc, whomever that is, you are such a nerd. And for once I can say that because I’ve ran away from technology for the time being :-)

How does it feel being the only one using your IT degree for its true purpose in life? You just thought it would always be me.

  5. Actually nickmc and Robin ….

Chris is NOT a nerd….the correct terminology would be Geek. I say this because I proudly wear that title myself. A Nerd is someone more inclined towards Mathematics and calculations than computers and Software. My wife will Proudly tell others she is married to a computer geek. My children brag about their computer geek dad.

However, That is NOT why I came here to comment. Chris I am in Desperate need of some Wordpress help. My migration to WP from S9Y is moving but darned if WP is not showing its proverbial tale and proving to be a complete nightmare.

Please drop me a line ASAP.

  6. HedoSean…okay I can take your point there. Chris is definitely a computer geek, but I am also going to leave him with the nerd title because I dont want that one back and I am sure it fits as well.

  7. Yeah, that’s right, I’m a GEEK! I was a band geek and now I’m a computer geek, and proud of it! Nerd I will disown, though.

Speaking of this, I had a little “scare” with my new install tonight. I knew I was going to dual boot Linux and Windows. Linux will be the primary, so I got that up and running first. Then I installed Windows… Some may cringe now, because Windows trashes the MBR (the thingee that tells the computer what and how to boot). Anyway, I had no way to get back to my Linux install and thought it was lost for good and I was going to have to reinstall everything again, with Windows first this time. After some google searching, I did find a way to fix it. Woohoo!

Okay, my geek time is over now.

  8. So how’s the Ubuntu world treating you now? Haven’t seen you online in forever to ask ya on ICQ/GTalk/etc.

    Paul

  9. Ubuntu world is okay, though I’m stilling dual booting. I can’t get some things to work in Wine, so I have to boot to Windows for my games, mp3 player, phone, etc. I’m having trouble with videos, too. I’m sticking with it for now, though, so I hope I can get these issues fixed.

  10. so is this still valid? I’m posting from a laptop running ubuntu and all my hardware is runing great out ofthe box. still prefer suse tho…

  11. Nope, switched back to XP a few months after the post. Never could get those gadgets to work. Glad you’ve had success. It’s been over a year since I last tried it, so I may need to give it another shot sometime.
