Random Ramblings

Finally some down time! It feels like I’ve been on the go without much time to just sit and relax for way too long now. It’s been a good busy, but it is nice to have nothing at all to do for a change. Well, I guess I shouldn’t say I don’t have anything to do - I haven’t touched my homework for tomorrow’s class yet and I need to get prepared for the GMAT this weekend. And that’s why I’m blogging. :-) College procrastination is like riding a bike - a skill you don’t easily forget…

Amazon just went live with their new mp3 download service. The songs and albums are cheaper than iTunes AND they’re DRM free, meaning you can play them anywhere since they’re not tied to specific software or music players. Kinda surprised the RIAA is letting Amazon do that, but Amazon is big enough that it should last and not get shut down.

What falls shows are you looking forward to? The Office premiere is tomorrow! Heroes was pretty good, but there are still a lot of questions. Chuck looked pretty good. I missed Journeyman - anyone see it and recommend it? Kid Nation isn’t horrible but I doubt I’ll stick with it all season. I can’t watch much live TV, so I’m loving my DVR.

Got some work to do on my computer. When I upgraded a few months ago, I installed Windows Vista. It’s not bad, but I don’t know what the hype was about is. I had some issues, but nothing huge until I had a LAN party with the guys and we couldn’t play several games because of Vista. Vista doesn’t have IPX and DirectX10 is missing DirectPlay (it was deprecated). Also, there are no Vista drivers for my mp3 player and my cell phone doesn’t play nice with Vista. Since I don’t see any great benefits for being on Vista, I’m going back to XP rather than worrying about fixing up Vista. That’s a project for a weekend before I have a test :-)

I’m also looking for a new theme for the ol’ website. It’s been a while since the last change, so it’s time for something new. What do you think - should I stick to the dark background with light text, or switch it around (as it used to be). I’ll probably take the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress as well and remove some things, too, such as the gravatars from the comments and clean up the sidebar some, in an effort to streamline things some.

Hmm, that’s all I got for now. Keep me in your prayers as I deal with some bitterness and take the GMAT this weekend. I’ll be good to get the GMAT out of the way. Heading to Kings’ Island for Fear Fest…er, Halloween Haunt…afterwards, so that’ll be a good way to unwind afterwards.

  1. > I installed Windows Vista. It’s not bad, but I don’t know what the hype was about is.

For Windows, it’s similar to what Mac OS 10.0 (codename: Cheetah) was–a big step away from the past, but something not entirely baked yet.

I live with this thing all day (Vista), and I gotta tell you–it’s a disaster. Its like they had tons of good ideas that got 95% completed–lots of bugs, lots of “wow, we didn’t think of that”.

Yeah, once I got my new job with the company and had to deal with Vista every day, I called up my wife and said, “We are SO buying a Mac. This is a cruel joke”.

  2. i’m liking the dark background. it makes it different than most boring white background sites! and since when is fearfest not a cool name anymore? halloween haunt? now that’s lame…

  3. Procrastination how well we can do that when we should be reading, researching, writing, or who knows what else school related. (ie me at the moment as I catch up on the latest happenings)

What falls shows are you looking forward to? (Another procrastination tool this week. I can say that I dont know what half the seasons are starting out as because I have not seen any of the previews as of yet.)
CSI: Miami and NCIS definitely opened the season nicely. How I Met Your Mother was not an overly impressive start though it is a decent 30-minute show.
Tonight is Grey’s Anatomy and CSI, both of which should be good.
Friday night Numbers and maybe Men in Trees.
Brothers and Sisters was a new one that I started to watch the end of last season.

Couple new shows that I am debating watching:
Cane which I saw the last half of on Tuesday night could be an intriguing show. I am still trying to decide if I really have time to watch it or not.
Private Practice break off of Grey’s, I missed it last night.

DVR is nice though because I can record all of these shows and decide as time goes along if I have time to watch or not. It is a lot easier than videotape and constantly having to change out tape and watch things in the order that you tape them so you dont miss something.

Okay maybe I should stop procrastinating and get some schoolwork done.

  4. I like the dark theme - besides it saves power (takes less power to light up a monitor/LCD on a dark screen than a white one).
For fall shows, I am watching survivor. Guess I’m a sucker for it. The Office, Heroes, Earl, and that new show with Kelsey Grammer and Ray Romano’s TV wife. So far its pretty good, but I think most things Kelsey Grammer does are really good.
I also watch prison break on occasion. One show that I like is Kyle XY..just wish it wasn’t a summer-only show.

  5. Harold:
I’ve thought about going the Mac route, especially for a laptop, but they are expensive. My other hang up is I don’t have any experience with Macs, so I have a hard time justifying the cost for something that I don’t know what I’m getting into. I’m pondering going back to Ubuntu, but I have a feeling the same issues I had before (roughly the same issues as I have with Vista) will still be there.

  6. Have you thought of Suse Desktop? Novell has done a bang up job with it. Although, you may still have problems playing your games. Not sure if Wine or other programs like it would support all the games youw ant to play.

  7. I switched to a Mac two years ago and haven’t looked back. I used one in a lab a little bit before I decided to pull the trigger, and decided I could handle it.

    I’m a fan.

  8. Thank you so much for helping Ben put the crib together! It looks great!

  9. You’re welcome!

  10. Yeah for procrastination!!!! I’m an expert!!!
I watched Journeyman. It was pretty good. Not quite what I expected, at least in the way he ‘traveled’.
