Color Blindness

As many of you know, I’m color blind. You know that test, with the circles and numbers inside? I took one of these tests at the doctor when I was younger and only saw 3 of the nine or ten numbers. Thankfully, I’m not as bad as my brother, who only saw 1, I believe. It can be tough at times being color blind. I don’t know what it’s like to live in a non-color blind world, though, so I don’t really know what I’m missing until someone points it out.

Critiquewall.com has a nice post about color blindness and gives a glimpse into a color blind world for non-color blind people. At least, I think it’s a glimpse… The images look pretty accurate to me - I can’t really tell any difference in the images, but I don’t know how non-color blind people see them. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this post and the images.

  1. Ya know, I sometimes forget you are color blind!! Well, here’s how they look to someone that isn’t color blind:

1st pic: With the left picture, most of the dots are shades of green with the number 45 in the middle with red and orange dots. The right picture has dots that are all shades of orange and brown with no number in it.

2nd pic: The left picture has a blue sky and the leave are green with red berries. The right picture has a blue sky and the leaves as well as the berries are a greenish yellow color.

3rd pic: The left picture has green leaves with blue flower, blue sky, and the girl has on a red dress. In the right picture, everything is the same except for the leaves and the dress…which are a greenish yellow color.

4th pic: Same as 3rd pic, without the sky! Also, forgot to mention that the skin color on both pics goes from being a white/peach color to having a little green tint.

5th pic: The Christmas tree on the left has very green needles, red bows and ornaments, and brown bears. Everything on the right tree has a greenish yellow tint.

6th pic: Guy on the left has a skin color that is reddish brown. Guy on the right has that same greenish yellow color as the other pics.

7th pic: The leaves and grass are green with the flowering part of the plant being pink in the left picture. The right picture has the leaves and grass a greenish brown, with the flower part being grayish blue.

8th pic: On the left, the barn is red, the berries are purple, and the vines/leaves are green. On the right, the berries are blue and the barn and plants are a greenish yellow again.

9th pic: The left pic has shades of green, yellow, and red. The right pic is all yellow. That’s only inside the highlighted area. The other area on the left pic is gray with a little red tint, and the right is all gray.

10th pic: For ice cream colors, 1 is top, 2 is left, and 3 is right! On the left pic 1 is orange, 2 is green, and 3 is pink. The cone is orange/yellow and the poles holding it up have a red tint. For the right pic, the poles are gray and everything is yellow except for 3 which is gray. Also, there are white lines between the ice cream scoops on both pics.

11th pic: There is a lot of red in the left pic. The lady’s dress is red. The dragons tongue and several scales are red. The blooms falling through the air are red, and there is a lot of things red in the bottom pile of stuff. In the right pic, all the red stuff appears brown. Also, the sky is blue as well as the birds breasts and a few other things.

12th pic: For the left pic…top light is red, two on the left are black, and the two on the right are yellow and green (top then bottom). For the right pic…the top and two on the right are all yellow. The two on the left are still black. Also, the sky is gray in both pics as well as the pole and sign.

There are a few subtle differences in all the pics I didn’t mention. Mainly just different shades of colors, but they are very slight differences. I think I listed all the main differences!

  2. Wow, thanks for the descriptions! Of all the pics, I can only see any sort of difference between two of them - the 3rd and the 5th. If I stare at a couple others (stoplights and 2nd pic), I can eventually make myself see a difference, but it takes some work and someone pointing it out (and describing it!) to really see it.

  3. Wow. Everything is so yellow in the color-blind ones.
