New Digital Camera

My digital camera drowned during a recent canoe trip so I’ve been researching what’s out there in order to replace it. My main wish list items are small size (easily fit in pocket), good battery life and inexpensive.

I think I’ve found a winner: Canon PowerShot SD1100IS

Good reviews on Amazon.com and elsewhere, the feature set is nice and the price is right. It’s 8 megapixel with a 2.5 inch LDC screen. It’s not top of the line, doesn’t take outstanding pictures but that’s not what I’m looking for in a replacement. I think (hope) this will handle my needs just fine.

Any one had any experience, or know of someone how has, with this camera?

  1. Emily and I had one of these before we went to the SLR. It was very handy since it was so small. I ended up cracking the LCD on it at the detroit auto show back in jan 07. The viewfinder was teh suck so we just used my Olympus for a while before going with the Nikon.
The Canon took decent photos and even pretty good video. We would sometimes notice some artifacts in the photos when using the flash - almost like the flash caught a dust particle in the air. Was pretty weird. On Paulandemily.com/gallery and Go2Fast.net/gallery, the majority of the photos from 2006 and 2007 were taken with that Canon I think.

  2. Thanks for the info, Paul! I know you research pretty well before buying, too, so if you ended up with it, it must have been pretty good. Bummer about the LCD, and I’m hoping the flash/dust particle issue was a fluke, which I think is the case since I haven’t read anything about it in the negative reviews.

  3. Doh! Thanks for the head’s up…I had already ordered it earlier in the week from Amazon. Got it with free shipping for only $5 more than Newegg’s sale price and a 4GB SD card for only $10, so it wasn’t too bad. Only missing the case…

Got the camera yesterday. Only played with it a bit so far, but seems really nice. Literally 3 of them can fit inside my old camera!
